Edinburgh, Scotland (1 Belgrave Place)

Woke up early and saw this out the front window:

Finally got my hair cut. Also mailed a letter (my Last Will and Testament) at the post office to my Executor, bought some coasters for the dinning room chairs so they wouldn’t squeak when I moved them, and a trip to the grocery.

I heard back from my cousin and received some great feedback and inspiration. Was able to complete a few more stories. Still have much more to write.

Later, I made chicken noodle soup for dinner and watched a few more episodes of “Stranger Things”.  I was tired by 10:30 and went to bed.

Tomorrow I return to the gym and re-start my workouts. Great to be feeling so much better!

Edinburgh, Scotland (1 Belgrave Place)

After getting up and ready for a new day, I did my laundry and worked on some finances. Also put out my travel “souvenirs” for display.

My collection is a bit random. To the left is my old phone that I dropped and cracked the screen last Christmas in Westminster Abbey, to the right of the phone is a piece of brick from the ranch home in Grass Valley, above the phone is my mouse that wore out in Vienna and had to get a new one, to the right is a pen that was given to me by Ori, Cousin Molly’s husband, after the amazing dinner/wine tasting in Darmstadt (I’ll give away the pen at some point), the white smooth rock is from Isle of Man, a bottle opener (that I’ve never used) from Brussels, two rocks from Zermatt, Switzerland, a plaque from my church, an Egyptian scarab and obelisk, a key fob from Dublin, a feather from my trip to the Outer Hebrides with Barbara and Mary, and of course Paddington Bear from London, gifted to me by Prean and Viktor. There is no criteria as to what gets added and when. Just when I feel when the time is right.

I decided it was time to roast a chicken for dinner. I used one of the two ovens in the kitchen and it turned out perfect. Think I’ve made a roasted chicken at least 30 times so far. Potatoes and peas rounded out the meal.

I stayed up way too late last night binge watching a new series on Netflix, “Stranger Things”. Part sci-fi and part fantasy. It has been getting good reviews and I can see why.

Tomorrow I definitely need to get a haircut. I’ve been putting it off while my face was healing. Didn’t want to gross out the barber.

Edinburgh, Scotland (1 Belgrave Place)

Was up at 5:30 and ready to pack and clean the flat. It really feels good to leave a place clean and organized when I leave. Gives me a sense of accomplishment.

I was ready for the taxi to pick me up at 8:45 to drive me to the new flat. No way was I going to wheel my suitcase a mile. We arrived at the same time as the host’s assistant.

What a great place this is! Two bedrooms and two baths, great view of a nearby park and the Edinburgh Castle. The kitchen is fully equipped, thanks for the host who is a “foodie”. And two ovens! Plus, was able to reserve this place at a great price! I’ll be here until November 12th.

Here is the link to the new flat: West End Home

The wind was howling all afternoon and it took some time and effort to get the heat adjusted in the rooms to keep the place warm. Later I went grocery shopping at the same Waitrose that I went to when I lived in Edinburgh last year. I remembered where everything was. Walked away with two large bags of groceries. Then, packed them up the hill on the return trip. After putting the groceries away, I was ready for a nap!

Tonight, I joined some people from InterNations for dinner then we went to play pool afterwards. Great conversations during dinner and met new members too. A few more people from InterNations joined us there. I hadn’t played pool for at least 20 years. Did okay. Played 5 games and won one, with the help from my pool partner.

Was going to take a taxi home, but ended up walking instead. A good sign that I’m fully recovered. Walked nearly 14,000 steps today!

Tomorrow I’ll work on my memories some more and finish unpacking. Might even visit the gym too!

Edinburgh, Scotland (23 Great King Street)

Worked more on writing my memories. I emailed a rough draft to a cousin and will look for her feedback. Still so much to write.

Also finalized my Will and got my signature witnessed. Next will be to mail it to my executor. Once I get that done then all of my tasks to prepare for traveling will be completed. Was wondering who to ask to witness the signing of the Will. I had seen a letting office up the street and saw that they also manage estates and the drawing up of Wills, so I thought they would be a great resource to ask them to witness the Will. They were very kind and two people from that office witnessed my signing of the Will and then scanned and emailed the signed copy for my records.

Preparing for my move tomorrow to another Airbnb. While I’ll miss the place that I’m at, I’ll look forward to my new lodgings. I’ll have to get up early though. I need to meet the person at 9:00 a.m. who will give me the keys and show me around the place.

I’m feeling much better and ready for new adventures. Glad the Efudex treatment is over!

Edinburgh, Scotland (23 Great King Street)

Miserable sleep last night. Just can’t sleep for more than an hour or so. Probably because I take naps during the day. Getting cold outside and will need to turn on the heater in the main room where the living room and kitchen are located. But overall, I’m feeling much better.

Csabi confirmed that he will visit me next week before he returns to Hungary. He has been working in the Lake District since April and would like to see Edinburgh. He will keep me busy and I’m sure he will want to hike up Arthur’s Seat too. So much for taking midday naps.

I’m moving into my new flat on Saturday. I have confirmed that someone will be there to meet me – though he would like to meet at 9:00 a.m. which means I need to clean and pack before I leave here. No sleeping in on Saturday, which is fine because I wake up around 6:00 a.m. anyway.

Writing my earliest memories has turned out to be more fun that I thought it would be. Also heard from a cousin who is interested in reading what I’ve written so far, so will send her an early draft and get her feedback. Perhaps her comments will give me more subjects to write about. In any case, good inspiration for me to continue writing.

For dinner had more of the Shepherd’s Pie and later watched a 007 movie, Specter. I stopped the movie about halfway through and went to bed, but was up a couple of hours later and decided to finish watching the movie. Good movie, though a lot of people getting killed, but I guess that is par for James Bond.

Tomorrow I’ll continue to write my memories and decided to include pictures at some point. The weather is expected to get cooler but will clear up and have some sunshine during the day. Sunrise begins a little after 8:00 a.m. and Sunset is around 5:47 p.m. Daylight Savings Time starts on the 30th.

Edinburgh, Scotland (23 Great King Street)

I’m starting to feel like a snake. The red blotches are going away and now have skin pealing from my face. The most annoying is around my eyes and nose.

Was good to get outside and walk to the big Tesco to pick up ingredients to make Shepherd’s (Cottage) Pie. All I needed was the ground beef, onions, carrots, potatoes, and canned diced tomatoes.

While the beef was cooking, I started to cut up the potatoes to make the mashed potatoes that are spread on top of the meat mixture. Once everything was cooking, I started to write my first “Earliest Memories” stories. I wrote out several of them and was happy with my initial result.

The Shepherd’s Pie turned out very well. Though I had to make in the roasting pan which was a little too big and didn’t have enough massed potatoes to cover the meat mixture. It tasted good, which is all I cared about.

Netflix recommended that I watch “Jupiter Ascending” tonight. It is a science fiction movie that had mixed reviews, but still accepted the recommendation to see what it was all about. A very confusing movie, but had great special effects. In the end, I liked it.

Tomorrow I don’t have anything planned. I’ll continue to write my “Earliest Memories” stories and see if I feel like going out for a walk.

Edinburgh, Scotland (23 Great King Street)

Amazing at how little you can do (or not do) when you give up any expectations to accomplish anything productive.

My “sunburn” is going away and now I’m starting to peal around my nose and forehead. The red blotches are fading too. Soon I might be able to walk around and not scare pets and small children. Actually, I probably don’t look that bad, but guess we’re our own worst critics.

Having fun looking for interesting places to visit in London. Corrine will want to visit, as she should, the obvious landmark places and I have no problem visiting them again. Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge, and the list goes on. We will be tourist by day and be entertained at night with Christmas concerts.

I made some headway on making a list of memories to write about. After about an hour or so of jotting down subjects, the list is now at 165 subjects. The goal is to complete this project by Christmas.

Finished off the chicken noodle soup and will buy the makings for Shepard’s Pie tomorrow. Actually, because I use beef, it is technically a Cottage Pie. But I like the name Shepard’s Pie and some recipes mix up the names too.

Netfix recommended that I watch “The Notebook” which I did. Nice movie and glad for the recommendation. Wonder what Netflix will recommend for me tomorrow?

Edinburgh, Scotland (23 Great King Street)

Another lazy day for me. I have chicken soup to eat and a warm place to stay. Oatmeal for breakfast and soup for lunch. I even shaved today, which is a good sign.

Also thought about writing down random memories. My brother was interested in what I remember from growing up. Think I’ll first make a list of topics then fill in the blanks from there. I recently heard from a friend who was surprised at what I could remember, in detail, from many years ago. But I still need to get back to my pictures and confirm that last upload I did to OneDrive.

Heard from my friend from Hungary who might visit me in Edinburgh. I have two bedrooms in my new place, so will be nice to have someone use the spare room. He has never been to Edinburgh so will be fun to show him around. It is a very different city than Budapest.

At night I watched “Sense and Sensibility”. Netflix said I would like it, and I did.

Edinburgh, Scotland (23 Great King Street)

More sleep today and keep feeling a bit better each day. My chemically-induced “sunburn” (via Efudex) is slowly going away and I’m starting to feel normal again. One of my dermatologists said that people spend good money for a face peal, which is what this is, sort of.

The rest of the day I answered email and texts. Seemed that today was the day when I heard from a number of friends and family. Forgot to mention yesterday that I spoke with Cousin Donna about closing out her brother’s estate. Always a good conversation when we talk. Spoke with another U.S. friend via Messenger.

Messenger, WhatsAp and Viber can all be used to make calls, both domestically and to and from the U.S. at no charge. Also, Vodafone lets me buy 100 minutes of talk time to/from the U.S. for 5 Euro. This reminds me of the time when I was a high school intern at the local phone company (1970 – 71) where I’d keypunch the long distance charges so they would show up in customer’s monthly billing. The operators, who put through the calls, would write down the information by hand, with the cost, and we would keypunch that information on keypunch cards.

Corrine and I finalized the flat where we will be staying in London. Nice place! So many options and credit Corrine on finding this flat. I expect that we will only be there for morning breakfast and to sleep.

Here is the link: London Flat 12/10 – 12/18

Location link: 40 Sutherland Ave

Made a big pot of chicken noodle soup for dinner. I’ll make Shepherd’s Pie on Monday. I may be taking it easy, but my appetite is doing well.

In the evening, I watched “Notting Hill” just to get in the mood for visiting London.
