Day 1 – New York City

After a mad scramble to clear out my apartment yesterday, then happy hour with friends, I made it to the airport with time to spare.  I learned that I need to pare down my belongings.  I have a small carry on and backback – and checked them both last night at the airport.  Just took the messenger bag with me on the plane.  I doubt if I’ll get down to a toothbrush, two pairs of socks, underwear, pants, and a couple of shirts – but who knows?  Maybe?

I landed at around 6:45 a.m. and got to the AirB&B (LES: Lower East Side) at around 8:00 a.m..  The place wasn’t ready so left my baggage at the flat and went for a walk.  (13,000 steps) First to Astor Place to see if The Alamo was re-installed (it wasn’t), saw Finding Dory (to get out of the heat), then dropped by 21 Vandam Street where my grandfather lived in 1907.  Then a long walk back to the flat.

Tomorrow I’m traveling by train to Hyde Park to see the FDR and ER sites.  A friend of a friend is picking me up at the Poughkeepsie train station and we’re doing the sites.  Also having lunch at the CIA (Cullinary Institute of America).

The oly two pictures today are of building where my grandfather briefly lived in NYC and of Astor Plan (minus The Alamo)
