Hilton Hotel Helsinki (Kalastajatorpantie 1)
Slept in this morning and thankfully was able to get down for breakfast before they closed up. This Hilton offers a typical Hilton breakfast buffet along with a few Finnish items. I had my usual scrambled eggs, bacon and a croissant – also a bowl of corn flakes. Coffee and orange juice too.
I must have been tired because after breakfast I took a nap. Around 2:00 I thought I’d like to take the tram into the city and look around. As it turns out, a tram stop is a quick five minute walk from the hotel and a 20 minute ride into the downtown area. Helsinki’s population is about the same size, maybe less, than Portland. And the population of Finland is around 5.5 million.
When I arrived at the tram stop near the train station I decided to walk towards the harbor. As I started off in that direction I saw a group of musicians rehearsing near one of the many statues that are found in Helsinki. I ordered a cup of coffee from a Hard Rock Cafe sidewalk kiosk and continued to watch them rehearse.
After about 15 minutes I got up and continued my walk towards the harbor. On the way I came upon a food and music street fair in progress within a city park. Not sure of the occasion, but saw many food stands specializing in food from different countries and with music playing everywhere. After looking around I finally decided to order food from a booth specializing in Himalayan food (I don’t know why) and ordered a sampler plate so I could try a little bit of everything. Then found a stand that served freshly squeezed orange juice. They press the oranges while you wait, so it couldn’t have been fresher. While I ate, I enjoyed Latin music being played by a nearby group. From there I continued my walk to the harbor to investigate boat tours that I might take over the next couple of days. After about an hour it was starting to get dark so I headed home.
I was on my laptop for about an hour looking at places to visit in England for when Corrine comes to visit. She has made her flight reservations and will be in London September 26th. Then I watched a couple of episodes of “The Flash” on my laptop and went to bed shortly after that. Tomorrow I’ll try to book a tour on a harbor cruise. That should be interesting.
