Gzira, Malta (33 Triq Carlo Manche’)
The local celebration in Gzira continued this morning with a few loud fireworks at 8:00 a.m. The marching band played off an on throughout the morning and more fireworks too. No need to try to get more sleep.
Around noon I got dressed for a planned walk to Manoel Island. On the way to the island, I’ll see what other events are associated with the local celebration. My guide, Vanessa, on Friday told me the name of the celebration in Gzira but I forgot to write it down. Apparently, all of the towns on Malta have a similar celebration to honor what I would image would be a specific patron saint for their township.
After leaving the flat I walked in the direction of the music and found the marching band playing on the main street that runs through Gzira. There was a crowd gathered and most knew the words to the music being played. I took some pictures then walked over to Manoel Island.
Manoel Island is a small island which forms part of the municipality of Gzira in Marsamzett Harbor, Malta. It is named after the Portuguese Gand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, who built a fort on the island in the 1720s. (per Wikipedia)
Another hot day and I took my time walking past a couple of marinas on the island and down the road that runs towards the fort located at the far end of the island. It didn’t go up to the fort but walked around it to see the view of the harbor, the city and people swimming in the water. By the time I finished with my walk I was soaked in sweat. Time to return to my air conditioned environment.
The air conditioning and a shower helped cool me down before I laid down for a nap. I picked up a piece of pizza on my way back to the flat, ate the pizza and then took a nap.
After a good rest I made chicken salad for when I eat dinner late. I’ve been doing more trip planing and I found a place to stay in Gothenburg and a possible place in Stockholm. Both are Airbnb.
I ate dinner while I continued to watch Downton Abbey. Not sure how much time I’ll have to watch this series while in London. I stayed up until 1:00 a.m. until I was ready for some sleep.
Tomorrow I plan to visit Valletta, the capital of Malta. I’ll take a ferry that will cross the harbor to Valletta. Otherwise, I could take a bus, but a ferry sounds like more fun.
